Year Round Recreation

The Kalamazoo River

The Kalamazoo River is approximately 130 miles long. It runs through Kalamazoo and connects to Lake Michigan in Saugatuck, MI. With 27 riverfront developments, access sites and parks, there are numerous opportunities for fishing and watersports.

Kal-Haven Trail

The Kal-Haven Trail is a 33-mile trail connecting Kalamazoo and the city of South Haven on Lake Michigan. Open for hiking, biking, cross county skiing and snowmobiling, the trail follows an old railroad bed, crosses over bridges, and passes through small towns and points of historical interest.

The Kalamazoo River Valley Trail

The Kalamazoo River Valley Trail is a paved, multi-purpose, non-motorized trail made of 10-foot wide asphalt. While it is still being added to, it currently offers 22 miles over a number of different sections.

Mayor’s Riverfront Park

This park offers Basketball, a Canoe Launch on the Kalamazoo River, Fishing, picnic area with grills and a shelter, a nature trail, and playground.

Fort Custer Recreation Area

Fort Custer Recreation Area offers 22 miles of hiking, biking, and horse trails through a large natural area that includes three lakes plus the Kalamazoo River. Activities include hunting, fishing, mountain biking, cross country skiing and camping at the 219 modern campsites.

Portage Creek Bicentennial Park offers over 8 miles of hiking and biking trails with several opportunities to view scenic Portage Creek.

Schrier Park

Schrier Park has an indoor shelter with a cozy fireplace and is popular for year-round group rental. Schrier Park has a variety of trails for a peaceful walk or a winter cross-county ski adventure.

Bishop’s Bog Preserve

Bishop’s Bog Preserve is a natural treasure of the City of Portage with 152-acres and 1.5 miles of walking/cross-country skiing trails.

Yankee Springs Recreation Area

Yankee Springs Recreation Area is a 5,200 acre year-round park offering 30 miles of hiking trails, 12 miles of challenging mountain bike trails, 9 miles of horseback trails, two public beaches, picnic shelters, two universally accessible fishing piers, a modern campground on the shores of Gun Lake, rustic camping, an equestrian campground and a youth organization campground. During the winter, popular activities include cross-county skiing on than 10 acres of Nordic ski trails, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing.

Kalamazoo Nature Center Trails

The Kalamazoo Nature Center offers 13 trails covering over 10 miles of varied habitats from ponds to prairies, fens and forest, and all things in between.

Kellogg Forest

Activites include hiking, picnicking, jogging, biking, horseback riding (bring your own horse), forest loop drive, walking your dog on a leash, bow hunting, cross country skiing, and trout fishing.

West Lake Nature Preserve

This is a 110-acre wetland bog with 1,400 feet of lake frontage within close proximity to the City Centre. It features a bark trail winding through a shaded lowland forest and ending with a panoramic view of West Lake.

Al Sabo Preserve

The Al Sabo Preserve offers woods, wetlands, and open meadows with 25 miles of trails. Bicycles are restricted to approximately seven miles of the trails. A compass and map are advised since there are also unmarked and unmapped trails.

Motorsports

US 131 Motorsports Park

US 131 Motorsports Park (“The Fastest Track in Michigan!”) has a legendary 1/4 mile dragstrip that underwent a $14 million renovation completed in 2002 and offers first-class accommodations to all visitors. US 131 Motorsports Park has a history of offering the finest shows featuring the most prominent drivers in the sport of championship drag racing.

Kalamazoo Speedway

Offering a weekly NASCAR sanctioned series, Kalamazoo Speedway’s claim to fame is being the fastest 3/8 mile paved track in the world; in 2015, Mike Schewchuk broke the World Record for the second time on this track.

Winter Activities

Timber Ridge Ski Area

Timber Ridge offers 16 trails, 8 lifts, and a 250-foot vertical drop. Activities include skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.

Echo Valley Winter Sports Park

Echo Valley boasts a 400-foot inner-tube hill, 60-mph toboggan runs, and 43,000-sq. foot skating rink. Ideally suited for families and groups, Echo Valley also has a 2400 sq.ft. warming lodge with a circular fireplace plus food and beverages. All activities are free of height and age restrictions.

Lawson Ice Arena

Home to Western Michigan University’s NCHC Bronco Hockey team, the arena is used by the University for physical education classes, club sports, and open skate and within the community for tournaments, intramural hockey, and KOHA youth hockey programs. Each year Lawson Ice Arena is host to approximately 193,550 visitors, seating up to 4,000 spectators per event.
